SEOUL, May 6 (Yonhap) – Marvel Studios' superhero genre “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (Doctor Strange 2)” is expected to sweep the box office during the holidays interspersed with workdays.
According to the data from the Korean Film Council(KOFIC) on May 6, “Doctor Strange 2,” which was released on May 4, attracted 1,778,000 cumulative viewers within two days of release.
The box office hit of "Doctor Strange 2" is the fastest pace since the pandemic.
According to the distributor The Walt Disney Company, the film garnered 1,061,000 viewers on Children's Day alone, breaking the record of the number of moviegoers on Children’s Day in history. The old record was set by “Captain America: Civil War,” drawing 886,000 people in 2016.
It is the first time that a flick has topped the 1 million mark in attendance on one day since Nov. 30, 2019, when Disney's "Frozen 2" attracted 1.17 million people on its 10th day of release.
"Doctor Strange 2" is expected to continue to dominate the box office since there are no new films except for some movies targeting children. "Doctor Strange 2" accounted for 66.3 percent of the ticket sales as of the previous day.
Ahead of the holidays interspersed with workdays, the animation "The Bad Guys" and "Butt Detective The Movie" have been released to welcome the audiences. On the previous day, "The Bad Guys" attracted 115,000 people, while "Butt Detective The Movie: the Secret of Souffle Island" drew 62,000 audiences, each ranking second and third in the box office.
The movie "I Want to Know Your Parents," which was released last month and depicts school violence, and the fantasy blockbuster “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” are still at the top of the box office.
