SEOUL, Sept. 23 (Yonhap) -- Sunchang County in North Jeolla Province will hold the 21st Sunchang Jang Festival from Oct. 15-18 at Gochujang Folk Village and the Fermentation Theme Park, the county office said Wednesday.

 

Under the theme "Bringing Sunchang's Flavors to the World," this year's festival will feature a variety of programs celebrating jang culture, including a royal tribute procession featuring Sunchang gochujang, a gochujang-making event with international participants, a UNESCO jang-making performance and a global jang cuisine competition.

 

The festival will also offer a range of cultural events, including celebratory performances, a traditional tightrope-walking show featuring a World Heritage tradition and an autumn concert, as well as hands-on programs for making kimchi, makgeolli, pickles and meju, a fermented soybean block used to make traditional sauces.

 

In line with its status as a preliminary global festival selected by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the county plans to expand programs for foreign tourists and international students and improve facilities for international visitors.

 

Ahead of the festival, the county will hold a gochujang tribute procession on Oct. 2 around Deoksugung Palace and Gwanghwamun in Seoul.

 

Sunchang County Mayor Choi Young-il said, "The festival will offer visitors a chance to experience the rich flavors of traditional fermented sauces and fermentation culture while feeling the warmth of our community. We will do our best to prepare so that everyone can take home wonderful memories."
