SEOUL, July 4 (Yonhap) -- As interest in financial technology such as real estate and stocks have increased, financial technology courses run by department store cultural centers have also begun to gain popularity.
As a result, department stores are increasing class size and opening courses for the summer semester, while also conducting online courses.
According to the department store industry on the 5th, Hyundai Department Store's cultural center has doubled more than the portion of investment courses such as stocks and real estate from last summer's summer semester at 17 stores nationwide, including the Apgujeong headquarters.
This is due to the growing demand for investment-tech courses, and Hyundai Department Store is offering some popular courses online.
An official from the department store said, "Online classes also increased the number of applicants by 1.5 to 2 times than initially expected."
Some courses include "Building Stock Thinking," which was opened last month, and "Create My Own Investment Calendar," which began on the 2nd. Both courses were conducted online and offline at the same time, and the number of students increased by 1.5 times or doubled, respectively.
Shinsegae Department Store also increased the number of related courses by 24% in the summer semester, which began last month, starting from the spring semester (March-May).
An official at Shinsegae Department Store's Cultural Center said, "If the closing rate of general courses is 50-60% based on the figures received from our headquarters and Gangnam branches, the closing rate of investment-tech courses reaches 70-80%."
One of the Gangnam branch's summer semester courses, "Real Estate Auction School Beginner," changed the classroom to a larger one as applicants continued to request more even though the quota was full within a week of recruiting students.
Shinsegae Department Store is scheduled to introduce financial technology courses such as real estate auction online later this month.
Lotte Department Store has more than doubled the number of investment-tech courses among its summer semester courses at the Cultural Center, which began last month. The number of students has tripled due to the increase in the number of students taking each course.
In particular, applicants flock to the investment-tech course hosted by the "Star Instructor" despite the expensive tuition fees.
Lotte Department Store opened a small number of elite real estate courses conducted by a real estate expert last spring semester, which was reopened this summer semester after it was closed with an expensive tuition fee of 1 million won for the eighth time.
An official from a department store said, "These days, many people seem to visit the department store's cultural center because it has good accessibility and the level of instructors is guaranteed."
