Review of Mask Girl
Review of Mask Girl (no spoilers)
"Mask Girl" is a Korean series adapted from a webtoon that presents a twisted and dark portrayal of human beings in society. The story centers around the main character, a girl with an unconventional appearance who aspires to become an idol singer. However, the harsh realities of the world lead her to perform online with her face hidden, where she encounters a multitude of strange individuals. These encounters ultimately result in a series of murder scenes and inflict wounds on the characters.
The storytelling in "Mask Girl" is notable for its use of alternating timelines and perspectives. Each episode focuses on a different character, with the first three episodes introducing Kim Mo-Mi, Ju Oh-Nam, and Kim Kyung-Ja, whose paths become intertwined by chance. These characters all possess peculiar abnormalities, adding to the series' eerie and enigmatic atmosphere. This narrative technique allows viewers to explore the complex layers of each character in a fresh and captivating manner.
However, after the fourth episode, the series takes a new direction, with the characters becoming less eccentric. While it continues to introduce peculiar individuals in subsequent episodes, the story loses some of its earlier cohesion and unpredictability. It attempts to twist events constantly, resulting in a somewhat disjointed narrative that diminishes the charm of the initial storytelling.
Despite these narrative shifts, the actors in "Mask Girl" deserve praise, particularly in their portrayal of characters with psychological complexities. The lead actress, who transforms from an ordinary office worker with a good heart to a masked performer, delivers a remarkable performance. The later transition to a famous star is handled by a different actress (Nana), which, while commendable, doesn't entirely capture the same essence. The final transformation into an older character also feels somewhat disconnected from the previous portrayals.
One distinctive aspect of "Mask Girl" is its exploration of mature themes, including more explicit content than traditional Korean series. This, along with the inclusion of otaku-style characters, contributed to a higher age rating compared to typical Korean TV dramas.
In summary, "Mask Girl" offers an intriguing and bizarre plot, featuring characters with deep-seated psychological issues whose lives collide in unexpected ways. If you enjoy this element of surprise and psychological complexity, you may find it engaging. However, as the series progresses, the reasons behind these twists and turns become less coherent, leading to some disappointment. Nevertheless, the performances of the actors in their psychopathic roles make the show worth following to its conclusion.
