SEOUL, Oct. 16 (Yonhap) -- Works by prominent artists -- including Park Seo-bo, Yun Hyong-keun and Chung Sang-hwa, whose art collections are known to include pieces owned by RM of K-pop superband BTS -- will go under the hammer.
K-Auction said Friday that it will hold its October auction at 4 p.m. on Oct. 28 at its headquarters in Sinsa-dong, southern Seoul. A total of 85 works worth an estimated 11.2 billion won (US$7.6 million) will be offered.
Among the highlights are 16 works by seven Korean artists featured in "RM and SFMOMA: Between You and Me," an exhibition currently on view at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). The exhibition, which brings together works from RM's personal collection and the museum's holdings, includes works by modern and contemporary Korean artists such as Yun Hyong-keun, Chung Sang-hwa, Lee Seung-jo, Kim Tschang-yeul, Park Soo-keun, Lee Dae-won and Kim Chong-hak.
Chung Sang-hwa's "Untitled 84-3-1," painted in 1984, is estimated at 370 million-440 million won. The work demonstrates the artist's method of creating a grid-like surface by repeatedly folding and unfolding the canvas, stripping away paint and filling it in again.
Park Soo-keun's "On the Way Home," painted in 1964, is estimated at 680 million-1.8 billion won. The work depicts a woman returning home and is characterized by simplified forms and an evenly distributed texture across the entire surface.
Kim Tschang-yeul's "Water Drops" (1976), estimated at 300 million-500 million won, Lee Seung-jo's "Nucleus 87-09" (1987), estimated at 130 million-450 million won, Yun Hyong-keun's "Untitled" (1988), estimated at 50 million-70 million won, and Lee Dae-won's "Farm" (1986), estimated at 42 million-100 million won, will also seek new owners.
Three works by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (1929-2026), who died in August, will also be offered at the auction. Her 1981 work "Butterfly," which depicts a butterfly against a surface covered in blue dots, has an estimated value of 650 million-1.4 billion won. Two of her prints will also be auctioned.
The works up for auction can be viewed free of charge at the K-Auction exhibition hall from Oct. 17 through the day of the auction.
